Month One Turn Barrel : January 2026
The first part of my compost process was the turn barrel. I started by putting twigs at the bottom of the barrel for airflow. Then I layered my browns for carbon and greens for nitrogen in. I used leftover cardboard and old fruit and veggies respectively for this. I then layered the barrel with soil on top to cover odor and watered and sealed the barrel. Then I sealed the barrel off and turned it around 10 times to mix it around. The barrel already had air vents for air flow so no holes were needed. I will continue doing this process for a month until I noticed significant change.
I then commenced with the second portion which was the blended portion. I cut fruit up and put it into a blender. Once turned into a liquid state I used the same process of layering. I layered the bottom with twigs, then I used leftover cardboard from a box for the browns, added my puree in for the greens, the layered with soil, and watered. For air flow I got another piece of cardboard and punched holes in it and placed it in top of the pot. This method of composting surprising decomposed really fast in the first couple of days. Next month I’ll compare each soils ability for planting and we will see if faster=better in this case.
The final method was a hand turning the soil. I repeated the steps for the blender, however, instead of blending, I just cut the fruits and threw them right in. Then I covered with soil and watered the pot. I used cardboard again for the cover. This one was slow in the first couple days not a lot of progress. Maybe the slow growth will prove more beneficial later on?
